Transgender, a taboo in India ?

First of all I apologise for writing after so long. The good news is, I am writing my first novel but that is why I don’t get enough time to write the articles so often. But here I am.

We live in a world where men and women are considered equal. Where they are doing miracles, achieving extraordinary goals.

But still there is a part of society or I must say nature, which is not doing as great as the men and women. The ” TRANSGENDER “. They are considered improper for the society.

So is transgender a taboo ?

Transgender people are people who experience a mismatch between their gender identity or gender expression, and their assigned sex. Transgender is also an umbrella term which can include people whose gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex (trans men and trans women), as well as people who are neither exclusively masculine nor exclusively feminine (e.g. people who are genderqueer, bigender, pangender, genderfluid, or agender).Transgender people are sometimes called transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition. Other definitions of transgender include third-gender people as transgender or conceptualize transgender people as a third gender and infrequently the term is defined very broadly to include cross-dressers.

 

It doesn’t matter what people define them to be. But for me, they are human beings.

According to Census 2011 ,

Transgender in India

Indian Census had never recognized third gender i.e. Transgender while collecting census data for years. But in 2011, data of Transgender’s were collected with details related to their employment, Literacy and Caste. In India, total population of transgender is around 4.88 Lakh as per 2011 census. The data of Transgender has been cubbed inside “Males” in the primary data released by Census Department. For educational purpose, separate data of Transgender has been curved out from that.

 

and the list goes on.  While transgender activists estimate the numbers to be six to seven times higher.

In 2014, the Supreme Court of India legally recognised the transgender community as the “Third Gender”. Prior to the verdict, transgender people were treated as objects of ridicule, prejudice and humiliation who were not only denied their basic human rights but also not recognized as citizens of India. They are also a community negatively stereotyped as eking out a living from begging and commercial sex work.

In India there are a host of socio – cultural groups of transgender people like hijras/ kinnars, and other transgender identities like – shiv-shaktis, jogtas, jogappas, Aradhis, Sakhi, etc. However, these socio-cultural groups are not the only transgender people, but there may be those who do not belong to any of the groups but are transgender persons individually. Though an accurate and reliable estimate of transgender people is not available, it cannot be denied that their number is miniscule compared with the total population of the country.

The transgender community, generally known as “Hijras” in this country, are a section of Indian citizens who are treated by Society as unnaturals and generally as objects of ridicule and even fear on account of superstition. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and ought to be entitled to enjoyment of human rights without discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Everyone is entitled to equality before the law and equal protection of the law without any such discrimination. Transgenders are also part of society and have equal, rights as are available to other persons. The discrimination based on their class and gender makes the transgender community one of the most disempowered and deprived groups in Indian society.

 

Despite of the fact that transgender is a third gender in India. Still a lot of problems are being faced by transgenders in their day-to-day life ie. discrimination, lack of educational facilities, unemployment, lack of shelter, lack of medical facilities like HIV care and hygiene, depression, hormone pill abuse, tobacco and alcohol abuse and problems relating to marriage, property, adoption.

You know why ? Not because of government. But because of us. We haven’t accepted them as a part of society till yet. We still get afraid when we see them at traffic signals asking for money in exchange of blessings. We fear, if we don’t give them money, they will put a curse on us. Why !

 

Why do we get uncomfortable whenever we see a transgender ? They are as much human being as we are.

 

 

But somewhere, the transgender people are also at fault. They are insecure about their identity. They are not proud of themselves. The nature has created us all in a unique way. We should take pride in that.

My latest sketch will demonstrate the conundrum regarding transgender in our Indian society.

 

 

We all are beautiful. We all are proud to have this amazing life. Like this wolf, which is beautiful, bold, aggressive yet patient at the same time. It knows, how to love, how to protect, how to attack. But it is chained. The chains of insecurity, lack of social identity, discrimination, low self esteem have seized the beautiful wolf to express itself.

The wolf is a metaphor for transgender here. You all are beautiful. Break all the chains and free yourself from the orthodox lifestyle. You are not meant to live an inexorable or prewritten lifestyle like a witless ritual. You are meant to write your own destiny and live your life in an extraordinary way to change this world and make it a better place to live in.

I would request everyone to stop following the discriminative trends set up by this hypocrite world.

I can only URGE ! The power is in your hands, the change starts with you. YOU ARE THE CHANGE.

When you will become a change , you will change the world for a better place to live in.

Its a long journey but every journey starts with one step.

Aim to protect the transgender.

Act within time and when needed to say no discrimination to them.

Achieve the happiness.
